Coffee robusta is a variety that
can grow to more than 12 m in height. It grows quickly in altitudes up to 600 m, and is
more resistant to pests and diseases. This variety was discovered in the Congo in
1898 and is widely spread, especially in Africa, Asia and Indonesia where the
climate is unsuitable for
the cultivation of Coffee arabica. It represents approximately 25% of the total world coffee production.

Because of their higher caffeine content (about twice as much as Arabica) and strong character, Robusta’s are used mostly as blends. Robusta beans are typically small, rounded and brownish yellow in appearance. Robusta is “sun coffee” cultivated at lower elevations. Robusta varieties grown without shade at higher elevations.
